A native Marylander, David Hawxhurst was raised on a farm by the Chesapeake Bay. The beauty of that area first inspired his love of photography, and he remains active in conservation activities throughout the region. He has also taught wildlife photography courses and done pro bono work for non-profits such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, American Forests, and the Nature Conservancy. His commercial clients include The Smithsonian, World Bank, the US Navy, Chesapeake Life Magazine, National Geographic Kids, Johns Hopkins University, and US Department of the Interior. Hawxhurst's images have been displayed in galleries around the Washington DC area.
